Ash Born Interactive is a small, family-run indie game studio founded by husband-wife duo Joel and Christine Heath. The studio’s debut title, A Demon Hunter’s Guide to Passing Finals, is a story-driven JRPG built in RPG Maker MZ that blends anime-inspired storytelling, deep worldbuilding, and systems designed to support narrative and character growth.
A cross between Pokemon and Harry Potter, DHG follows a student demon hunter navigating academy life, supernatural threats, and personal destiny. The game features an expansive elemental system, a strategic card-battle minigame, and a crafting-focused progression loop intentionally designed to reinforce emotional stakes rather than padding or grind.
As a disabled creator who grew up in an abusive environment and faced long-term barriers to traditional employment and creative opportunities, Joel framed the studio around intentional design and building something sustainable despite systemic obstacles. Christine plays a central role in product testing, feedback, and balancing.
Joel says, “We’re building A Demon Hunter’s Guide to Passing Finals slowly and intentionally. Every system exists to serve the story—if a mechanic doesn’t reinforce meaning, effort, or character growth, it doesn’t belong. Keeping the team small allows us to prioritize cohesion, accessibility, and long-term sustainability over rushing toward trends or inflated scope. Success for us isn’t just shipping a game—it’s proving that thoughtful, narrative-driven development can still thrive in an environment that often rewards speed over substance.”
ABI will seed a nonprofit initiative called Dream Pathway Project, focused on supporting individuals whose disabilities, trauma, or life circumstances make traditional employment inaccessible.
